Diamond Size FAQ
Common questions about how carat weight relates to visible size, and how to get the most out of your diamond budget.
Does carat equal size?
No. Carat is a measure of weight (1 carat = 0.2 grams), not physical size. The visible size of a diamond depends on its cut quality and shape. A well-cut diamond will appear larger than a poorly-cut stone of the same carat weight.
Which diamond shapes look biggest?
Oval, marquise, and pear shapes appear the largest for a given carat weight because their elongated silhouette covers more surface area on the finger. Round diamonds appear smaller than their weight suggests because of how the facets are cut.
Should I prioritize size or quality?
Balance both. A well-cut, smaller diamond will often look more brilliant and beautiful than a larger diamond with a poor cut. We recommend prioritizing cut grade first, then balancing carat, color, and clarity within your budget.
How does cut affect perceived size?
An excellent or ideal cut maximizes light return, making the diamond appear bright and vibrant. A poorly cut diamond (too deep or too shallow) leaks light, making it look dull and smaller than its actual carat weight.
